The world is changing and by definition, we cannot change with it.
The only reasonable thing is for us to change the world in the ways we can.

–Sigil

Sigil Umbar is a Raposa created by GuyThatExists that appears in the short story The Lavasteam Chronicles Part Three as a supporting antagonist and in the one-shot An Introduction to the Followers of Wilfre as the primary speaker of the tape. They also appear in The 35 as a character in 6 out of 105 segments and can be considered one of the series' primary antagonists. An Ameba doppelganger of them appears in The Lavasteam Chronicles Part Two as a supporting antagonist.

They are a founding member of the Followers of Wilfre, and made the tape that was used as an introduction for it. They were also a member of Watersong's Royal Guard, and were stationed on Ex-Isle during Wilfre's Second Attack. They were replaced by an Ameba version of themself, and when saved, they were almost immediately enthralled by Allight. After being freed from her influence, they left the guard and killed the Hero, garnering outrage from Jowee, who proceeded to kill them in the fight against Allight.

After death, they appeared on The Wasteland, where they hide out in the Underground Town for years. Eventually, they work with Sin Sin, a former Follower, to start the Shadowdwellers, a group of ghosts working to make themselves known to the world. This group becomes wildly successful and operates from underneath The Wasteland, completely unknown to Steven. They eventually work to kidnap Jowee's crew on their trip, using them as leverage to get Mari on their side.

TowerIcon.png Appearance[edit]

Not much is known about Sigil's appearance, although they do have almost black fur. It is also assumed that they used to wear some armor and a helmet while on duty.

Book Icon.png Story[edit]

An Introduction to the Followers of Wilfre[edit]

Before their time in the Royal Guard, Sigil was the founder member of the Followers of Wilfre, an organization devoted to teaching Wilfre's ideals while separating them from his malicious acts. At one point, Sigil recorded a tape for new members, introducing them to the organization and some members, including Titania, Sin Sin, and Athena.

Some time later, Sigil joined the Watersong Royal Guard and was stationed on Ex-Isle.

The Lavasteam Chronicles Part Two[edit]

Sigil is present in a meeting with Terra, Mog, Elodie, and Salem. When the meeting is interrupted by Kacha, Sigil is kidnapped by Salem and replaced by an Ameba doppelganger of themself. The Ameba then takes the opportunity to kidnap an exile, Harsonist, taking him to the lowest chamber of the island - the chamber that houses the Mannequite crystal. Salem then drains Harsonist's color, making an Ameba doppelganger of him, and uses the Ameba to crash Rose's opera.

After Wilfre drained the Color of Ex-Isle, and it was restored by the Creator, they were one of the Raposa who listened to Colepere resolve the exile's rally. They were later one of the many Raposa enthralled by Allight.

The Lavasteam Chronicles Part Three[edit]

For the next year, Sigil acted as a unwilling servant to Allight, notable working with Harsonist and Alphonse while under her influence. Eventually, when Turtle Rock docks at Ex-Isle, Sigil is one of the many thralls to be completely taken over by Allight's influence thanks to the power of the Ruby Earring. When surrounding Eeny, Mari, the Hero, and some RapoKids, Sigil swung at the Hero, kickstarting a battle on the island.

After the Mannequite shards froze them in place, Sigil was freed from Allight's influence and teleported to Lavasteam with Meeny and some other former thralls. When the battle with Allight started, Sigil waited for the Hero to turn their back during the fight, eventually killing them. This surprised both Jowee and Allight, leading Jowee to begin attacking Sigil. Just then, Sigil offered their body to Allight, allowing themself to be engulfed in light once more. Sigil and Jowee continued to battle until Fext killed Allight, and Sigil's light abilities were taken away. This allowed Jowee to plunge his sword into Sigil's back, killing the Raposa once and for all.

The 35[edit]

2009[edit]

After death, Sigil appeared on The Wasteland, where they are met by Uzim, another ghost, and takes in the geography and architecture of the Wasteland. Sigil is irritated and discovers the Underground Town, which they decide to hide out in, demanding that Uzim leave them be.

2017[edit]

Years later, Sigil hears a fight between Uzim and Sin Sin, and they tell everyone else to leave as they approach Sin Sin, recognizing him as a former member of the Followers of Wilfre. Just then, Steven arrives to take care of the incident, and Sigil adamantly refuses to hand Sin Sin over to him, instead taking Sin Sin back to their home.

Once they arrive, the two of them discuss how the Followers of Wilfre had been long disbanded thanks to their death, and that as ghosts, they could not adapt with the changing world. They then decide to start a new organization, the Shadowdwellers, which worked to let the ghosts change the world as much as they could.

2020[edit]

Three years later, the Shadowdwellers had become a massively successful group, finally giving some ghosts a purpose in their afterlife. During an annual gala at Sigil's house, they introduce the night's keynote speaker, Eugene Shinar, the first Mayor of Rapoville. Sigil listens as he tells his story of wandering the afterlife before the creation of Wilfre's Wasteland, and he introduces his great grandchild, Zerua, their grandson Nathan, and a Liškan Raposa - Ephren. After Eugene's speech, Sigil is finally content with their afterlife.

2023[edit]

Late in 2023, Sigil works with the Shadowdwellers to kidnap Jowee and his crew on Turtle Rock. After they are kidnapped, Sigil tasks Roza, Mari's great-grandmother, with taking Angelia and returning her to Rapoville with a note demanding Mari's presence the next month.

2024[edit]

When Mari arrives in the new year, Sigil finds her looking through their notebooks, and asks her to sit on their couch. They explain that they aren't holding a grudge against Mari or Jowee for letting them die, and they promise that the rest of the captives are safe. When Mari tells them about how Angelia was on the brink of death, Sigil promises to punish Roza. They then explain that they want Mari to denounce Rust City, claiming that the location would always be Shadow City, and they then introduce Mari to Sin Sin and Lavinia.

Sigil explains their next demand of Mari - find a way to get free the ghosts from The Wasteland. Mari says that she doesn't know how much help she would be, since she hadn't spoken to the Creator in some time, but Sigil tells her to figure it out, threatening Jowee's life if she didn't. Mari is then dismissed from their meeting, and Sigil watches her sail off.

Quote Icon.png Quotes[edit]

Hello and welcome to your first official Followers of Wilfre meeting!
My name is Sigil, and I hope each and every one of you is excited to be here today.

–Sigil

The Followers of Wilfre is an organization that stands for individual freedoms and independence from the Creator.

–Sigil

Our founder Wilfre was born and raised in Rapoville, where he was shunned for his beliefs and chased out of the village.
He made his home here, in Shadow City, where he felt accepted and loved.

–Sigil

As Followers of Wilfre, we have felt that same persecution, and we strive to help all of you feel accepted and loved as well.
Now, I know what you may thinking. Sigil, I’ve heard some bad things about you guys.
I don’t know if I can trust anything you’re telling me! I completely understand your concerns.

–Sigil

Many people have tried to twist the tale of Wilfre into one of wickedness and corruption, but this simply isn’t the case.
Wilfre and his friends fought for independence and the right to create, something that the people of Rapoville were adamantly against.

–Sigil

However, I understand that I have my biases, so take it from these members of our organization.

–Sigil

Throughout this presentation, our staff have been passing out pamphlets and documents that we will be going over later tonight.
For now though, please enjoy the food and mingle with everyone else here! And remember, it’s our duty to help each other out. Thanks for coming!

–Sigil

Of course! Anything to help the one who freed us!

–Sigil

While Enthralled

That was for the free will you stole from us!

–Sigil

You may take me again if you wish.

–Sigil

This can't be real.

–Sigil

What in the Creator's unholy name is happening here?!

–Sigil

Where am I?

–Sigil

I need to get back home. How do I get out of here?

–Sigil

Who are you?

–Sigil

I'll tell you on one condition.

–Sigil

My name is Sigil. Now don't follow me.

–Sigil

Get out of here. I need to speak with Mr. LeBateau alone. In fact, I'd love for all of you to give us some alone time.

–Sigil

No, I'll speak with him.

–Sigil

Mr. Shaal. I think it would serve all three of us well if you were to back away and let me deal with Mr. LeBateau. Regardless of his status as a Follower, I can guarantee that I know him much better than you all do.

–Sigil

Uzim seems very adamant that the Creator still has a presence here despite that clearly not being the case.

–Sigil

It's clear to me that the Followers is a long–dead organization, but I've thought about this for time now, and I believe that as ghosts, and without being bounded by the Creator's prying eyes, we can become so much more!

–Sigil

And I thank you for that, Sin Sin. Do you think you can gather all the ghosts who seem discontent and bring them here in a month's time?

–Sigil

But it's for a purpose. The world is changing and by definition, we cannot change with it. The only reasonable thing is for us to change the world in the ways we can.

–Sigil

I hope that we can start something amazing together.

–Sigil

No. I think he's changed too much to be aligned with us anymore. Though I must admit, we need a name that packs a similar punch.

–Sigil

Thank you. I'll see you around. Followers of Change. Followers of Justice. Leaders of Change.

–Sigil

Thank you all for coming to our annual gala, everyone! I hope that you've all been as busy as possible this past year, making us known to the world. Now, I would love to introduce tonight's special guest. They've been scouring the world as a ghost for decades, and I ask that you all give them a hearty welcome to not only The Wasteland, but also the Shadowdwellers. Introducing Mr. Eugene Shinar!

–Sigil

Alright everyone, I've heard some exciting things from the outside world recently, so let's spend the rest of the night celebrating our accomplishments!

–Sigil

Dear Mayor,
We have your friends and your enemies. They'll be treated as equals if you do not comply. All we ask is that you denounce this so–called "Rust City" and visit the Wasteland on the first day of the new year for another humble request.
We have sent Angelia back to you as a sign of good faith. Don't think for a second that we can't see what you do. The Shadowdwellers have eyes everywhere.
~ S

–Sigil

Ah! I see you've found my first Shadowdweller notebook. I have to say, it's quite interesting. I was quite hopeful when I started writing in this. I'm sure you know the feeling.

–Sigil

You did! Your husband killed me, and the two of you simply moved on. But the past is in the past! This afterlife has given me so many new opportunities that I never could've dreamed of before.

–Sigil

I'm getting there. Trust me, you want to hear everything I have to say. Though I should cut to the chase. I have a sneaking suspicion that I won't be able to sway you to my side.

–Sigil

Well, first off, your husband and his shipmates are safe. We've been feeding them well and keeping them as comfortable as we reasonably can. No one's dying.

–Sigil

Oh... yes I suppose that's true. We had to send a message, and to be clear I was against leaving her on the ship. Did your great–grandmother not take care of her?

–Sigil

Sorry, I know this is all new for you. Your lineage is all trapped here as a spirit, like me. Roza was on that ship with Angelia.

–Sigil

Mari, I mean this with the utmost sincerity. Roza will be taken care of accordingly. Angelia was supposed to be our show of good faith, not a torture project. I am so, deeply sorry. Regardless, everyone else is safe, I assure you.

–Sigil

As for what we want! We've already asked you to denounce Rust City. That location is Shadow City now and forever. As for our meeting today... We are here to negotiate terms of our release from this island.

–Sigil

Because we have your husband, Mari. That's the reason we kidnapped him. I thought that was clear.

–Sigil

Now, you've met Sin Sin. And this is my other close friend in our operation, Lavinia.

–Sigil

Now, as the acting mayor of Rapoville, we think it's safe to say that you have the closest active relationship to the Creator, yes?

–Sigil

We need you to fix that then. Since we haven't been freed yet, I assume there's something we must do first. You need to tell us what it is, because the Creator won't listen to us.

–Sigil

As much as I wished it didn't happen, you saw what happened to Angelia.

–Sigil

You have my word. Now, let's get you back home.

–Sigil

Oh and Mayor? Don't forget. We have eyes everywhere.

–Sigil
