Sandal is a Shadow created by GuyThatExists that appears in the short stories Blank Slates, Blank Slates 2, and Blank Slates 3 as a minor character. He also appears in the one-shot Self-Awareness as a minor character.

He is brought to life by Shadow Mari and is later adopted by Fiora. Some time later, he helps Aly restore her memories as Alana when she returns to The Void. When the Tree King attacks, he fights against and is possessed by the Jungle Creature. In this new monster form, he is responsible for restoring Rocko's memories of Repair Guy. Two years later, he helps fight against Tombstone in both the Drawn to Life and Shadow Villages before being knocked into the Developer's Grove by Tombstone. While fighting in the Grove, Sandal is sent into canon by Eric Kozlowsky, dropping him in Yulshade.

Appearance

Sandal is a small Shadow Dog, which takes the appearance of a short dog with stubby legs and a short tail. As with all Shadow creatures, Sandal is covered in shadow.

Story

Blank Slates

When Shadow Mari calls for all the Shadow and Ink monsters to attack The Void, Sandal is one of the many beings to rise from the Shadow Hole. When Shadow Mari calls the beings back into the hole, Sandal hides under Fiora's dress until after Mayo's breakdown. Eventually, Fiora decides to name the dog Sandal, much to Ore's amusement.

Self-Awareness

When Alana returns to The Void, still believing that she was always Aly, Sandal begins licking her, and its Shadow properties help Alana restore her memories.

Blank Slates 2

Suddenly, Salem Rose attacks The Void, killing the Four Guardians in the process. Sandal watched on as Salem Rose disappeared and an explosion rung out from the Wii Village. With help from Rocko, Nolan, Lambert, and Fiora, Sandal moves the bodies of the Guardians to the Guardians' HQ while everyone else goes to investigate the explosion.

When the group arrives at the HQ, they notice an argument between Mill, a reincarnated Flash possessing Doug's body, and Hans. Rocko investigates the conflict while Sandal and the rest of the group move the bodies inside the HQ. When Rocko, Mill, Hans, and their friends Zak and Mac come inside, Sandal listens as Mill tracks down the other three Guardians and organizes a mission to save them. Fiora, Lambert, Sandal, and Mill all begin their search for Paint.

The group tracks Paint down to the Color Vat, finding him reincarnated as Sparky, and locked in a battle with the Jungle Creature, the Tree King, and Squid. Mill and Sandal join the fight while Fiora and Lambert hide out in an abandoned house near the battlefield. They are later joined by Rocko, Nolan, and Fox when Hoopz and Violet, the other two reincarnated Guardians, join the fight.

Sandal is able to use his Shadow to help fight the monsters, and eventually, with Lambert's new abilities, the Guardians and Sandal are able to take all three of them down. The Guardians then take Lambert and leave, telling Fiora to watch over Sandal while he recovers from the fight. However, once the Guardians leave, Sandal's body begins to convulse, growing larger and more monstrous. Sandal starts attacking the house, so Fiora, Nolan, Fox, and Rocko all run out, but before Rocko can make it, he is crushed and absorbed by Sandal, inadvertently unlocking Rocko's memories of Repair Guy.

Eventually, Lambert returns and pushes Sandal into the Color Vat, freeing him from the Jungle Creature's influence. After Rocko and Sandal both crawl out of the Color Vat, Lambert leaves, and Fiora helps out Rocko and Sandal recover. One week later, Sandal is living with Fiora, Lambert, and Nolan when they are visited by Mill. He asks them how the village is holding up, so they tell him about Rocko's identity crisis.

Blank Slates 3

Two years later, Sandal is running around with Fiora, Lambert, and Repair Guy when Tombstone, the final piece of the Jungle Creature emerges from the Drawn to Life Village. Repair Guy, Lambert, and Sandal all arrive to fight it, and when they enter the village, the join up with Fox to attack. After Tombstone is felled by Lambert and Crawler's LARPing Group, Sandal watches as Gingerfre's Shadow army attacks and accidentally revitalizes Tombstone. Sandal sticks with Lambert as the group escapes to the Two Realms Plains.

In the Plains, Sandal and Lambert reunite with Aly, who was visiting after hearing of the Droogle Killer's death, and when Tombstone erupts from the Shadow Village, Sandal, Aly, and the Four Guardians all mobilize to fight. Sandal sticks with Lambert, using a plan devised by Aly to absorb Tombstone's Shadow for itself, slightly increasing Sandal's size. When Tombstone is defeated, Sandal works with Abyss and the Droogle army to absorb most of Tombstone's remaining Shadow. However, after the Five Aldarks plan to revive Tombstone is successful, Sandal and Abyss work together to scoop up and evacuate the fighters who were still in the village.

After the fight, Sandal joins the captains in the Guardians' HQ as they discuss their losses, next plans of attack, and the history of Monk. While the rest of the fighters leave the HQ at the end of this meeting, Sandal stays behind with Shadow Mari and Willham, as the two of them are interrupted by Fiora and Nolan, with Fiora believing that Shadow Mari was behind Tombstone's rampage, likening her behavior to Mayo's years prior. After sorting their differences out, learning more of the Jungle Creature's past, and after the screeners bestow God Ray Weapons upon the two of them, the five decide to head to the Two Realms Plains to intercept Tombstone.

When they arrive, they find the Shadow Hole slightly open, and Lambert's body is chucked from inside of it. Sandal smells his body as Fiora sits next to him, but Sandal is able to smell Tombstone's Shadow inside of the deceased Lambert, so as Tombstone emerges, Lambert's body sweeps Sandal into the Shadow Hole, sending him into the Developer's Grove. Shortly after he arrives, Goldie and the undead Droogle army begin attacking, so Sandal joins forces with Rocket Vulture, though he is eventually forced to hide behind the recently arrived Nolan with Mew Pod. They are then approached by Eric Kozlowsky, who sends Sandal away to "safety" with the Stylus.

Suddenly in canon, Sandal finds himself in a dark area and is soon joined by Abyss, Shadokomo, and the rest of The Void's Shadow army. Confused and disoriented, they are eventually approached by Flick, who welcomes the group to Yulshade, home base for Aldark and the Shadows in the Human realm.

Trivia

• The names Fiora didn't choose for Sandal are references to the types of cars shown in the final cutscene of Drawn to Life: The Next Chapter.
  • Electra is a reference to a 1970 Buick Electra, Deputy Snyder's car.
  • Commander is a reference to a 2008 Jeep Commander Sport 4x4, which is what fan's believe Mike's father drove.
• In early drafts of Blank Slates 3, the energy pulse created by Gingerfre, Jinxy, Violet, and Hoopz was meant to destabilize Sandal, making him more aggressive. This would have lead to a side plot where Sandal was also absorbing fighters in The Void. This was cut due to being an unnecessary addition to the story.
